Over-Forty Golfers Keep Their Game, by Working Out Like the Pros
At Boomer Fitness, golf-specific workouts beat age-related declines

SAN CARLOS, CA Oct 20, 2006 For aging golfers, it can be a real tooth-grinder: age brings the resources to spend more time enjoying the game, but after 40, performance begins to decline due to the body’s limitations.
At Boomer Fitness in San Carlos, baby boomers are overcoming the over-40 fitness backslide with workouts modeled on the ones the PGA tour players use to tune their performance. Tiger Woods, Vijay Singh, Annika Sorenstam, and other pros have proved that a well-conditioned body can hit the ball farther, with greater accuracy. Vijay Singh goes to the gym every morning, and Tiger Woods’s workout is so effective that he keeps it a carefully guarded secret. Woods says, "Most guys realize the equipment you really take care of is your body."
Boomer Fitness owner Arleen Cauchi says working on personal fitness is a lot more effective than the aging golfer’s desperation ploy of buying new clubs. The Boomer Fitness gym offers a 35-minute workout that focuses specifically on golf conditioning, to improve a player’s game while reducing pain and risk of injury.
“In the past,” says Cauchi, “instructors would add a few sport-specific moves to their normal routines and call it a ‘sport workout.' At Boomer Fitness, we designed a comprehensive program to increase the strength and flexibility of the muscles used to play the game of golf. The results have been better than we expected. Golf-specific conditioning offers a great way to get in better shape, while extending and improving your years of play.”
The results speak for the program. Bob Barone, a Bay Area recreational golfer, reports, “After a month, I noticed I wasn’t tired or sore in the usual trouble spots -- shoulders, back, and hips. The last swing on the 18th hole was as strong and fluid as the first one on the first hole.. Now after 3 months I’m hitting my 9-iron where I used to hit my 6 or 7 iron.”
Clients experience improvements in four areas: increased distance, increased accuracy, increased endurance, and less pain. Bay Area recreational golfer Alex Phillips says, “The golf workout dramatically improved my flexibility, balance, and core strength. My backswing and follow-through are nearly effortless, and the improved balance, stability, and increased core strength has added 15 to 20 yards to my distance." While golfer Dick Baker has seen his club head speed increase from 97mph to 105mph. “I happy with the gain,” says Dick, “but I most happy that my back pain has been eliminated. Greg Locke reports, “I’ve noticed that my endurance has increased – it’s easier to stay focused throughout 18 holes.”
Designed for those over 35, the golf workouts improve strength, flexibility, cardiovascular function, and balance. “Our clients find their performance improving in day-to-day activities as well in as sports,” Cauchi says. “The training produces noticeable results quickly -- our slogan is ‘Work out smarter, not harder!’ We designed exercises that are easier to do right than wrong, to reduce the risk that an over-zealous exerciser will get injured. We’ve created a spine- and joint-friendly environment that uses hydraulic equipment, exercise balls, resistance bands, and cardio machines. I couldn’t be more happier with the results!”
